Toys for Tots and Coordinating Centre County Food Drive
As many of you may already know, Centre County Toys for Tots works hand in hand with the eight Centre County Food Pantries. This is our primary means of distributing toys to our children. Again, we are asking everyone to assist in an effort to collect food for the food banks.
One of several programs administered through the Centre County Office of Adult Services is the State Food Purchase Program (SFPP), which is allocated to eight food pantries in the county: Bellefonte Faith Centre, Centre Hall/Potter Twp, Philipsburg Community Action, Snow Shoe/Mountaintop, Howard, Housing Transitions, Inc., and the State College Food Bank. This year with the closing of Penns Valley Community Action, New Hope Lutheran Church food pantry will take its place. Last fiscal year, these food banks collectively served 2,517 individuals with SFPP funds. That said, the number of families who are over-income for state-purchased foods, but need food assistance to overcome a temporary crisis, is increasing.
For those interested in making a food donation to our network of food pantries during the holiday season, we thank you. While food pantry clients receive a variety of items, there are products that cannot be purchased with state dollars. Donation ideas include: paper products, coffee, condiments, spices, baking products, hygiene supplies, and detergents.
We are pleased that Centre County food pantries will continue to be distribution points for families who are in-need of food and eligible for the Toys for Tots Program. On behalf of our department, we are grateful for all food pantry staff and volunteers who put in the extra time to make this program so successful.
From: Gene Weller
If you collect food along with toys, the food can be picked up at the same time for distribution to the food pantries or you can take them to your local food pantry. The goal is to try to collect a greater amount of food for the needy in Centre County not who is getting credit for the collection.
